Passivation Services

At National Aerospace Processing (NAP), our NADCAP-accredited passivation services enhance the corrosion resistance and longevity of critical aerospace components. These aircraft passivation processes effectively remove contaminants, free iron, and other surface impurities. This ensures optimal performance of stainless steel and other alloys. As a trusted metal finisher for the aerospace and defense industries, NAP combines advanced processing technology with deep industry expertise to deliver reliable, high-quality passivation services.

Types of Passivation

AMS-2700 Type 8

NAP provides AMS-2700 Type 8 passivation, which utilizes a high-concentration nitric acid solution (45-55% by volume) at medium temperatures. This process falls under Method 1 of AMS-2700 and is specifically designed for enhancing the corrosion resistance of stainless steel components in demanding aerospace applications.

Features & Benefits

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Strengthens the passive layer on stainless steel for long-lasting protection.
  • Aerospace Compliance Meets stringent aerospace and defense industry requirements.
  • Ideal for Critical Applications: Preferred for high-reliability aerospace components where nitric acid passivation is specified.

AMS-2700 Type 6

Our AMS 2700 Type 6 process also follows Method 1, but with lower nitric acid concentrations (20-25% by volume) to accommodate parts that may be sensitive to higher acid concentrations. This specification is widely adopted in the aerospace industry to provide optimal corrosion protection for machined or fabricated stainless steel components.ย

Features & Benefits

  • Effective Oxide Layer Formation: Removes free iron while promoting a robust passive film on stainless steel.
  • Industry Standard: Proven process for passivation of critical components, including fuel system parts and hydraulic assemblies.
  • Widely Accepted: Specified by leading OEMs, defense contractors, and Tier 1 aerospace suppliers for various stainless steel alloys.

ASTM-A967

NAP offers ASTM A967-compliant passivation, providing both nitric acid and citric acid-based options for versatile applications. This industry-standard specification ensures effective chemical passivation treatments for stainless steel parts, enhancing corrosion resistance and surface cleanliness.

Features & Benefits

  • Flexible Processing Options: Nitric and citric acid passivation methods based on specific material requirements and project needs.
  • Broad Applicability: Suitable for a wide range of stainless steel grades and families to accommodate diverse industrial needs.
  • Eco-Friendly Alternative: Citric acid passivation is an eco-conscious option for meeting aerospace corrosion resistance requirements.

General Aerospace Passivation Process

The state-of-the-art 10-tank system at NAP features integrated DI water rinses to deliver precise and efficient aerospace passivation. This process begins when our expert team provides a thorough cleaning and surface preparation. This is followed by the application of nitric or citric acid-based treatments โ€“ depending on customer and specification requirements.

We closely monitor bath chemistry, temperature, and exposure times to ensure every stainless steel component forms a strong passive layer that prevents corrosion and surface degradation. Our certified quality control system guarantees compliance with AMS-2700, ASTM-A967, and other relevant aerospace standards.
